Welcome to North Austin (North of 183)
The North part of the city consists of Austin neighborhoods with active neighborhood associations serving close-knit, multigenerational communities. People know their neighbors here and residents favor the central location and somewhat larger homes than can typically be found a little closer to downtown. You’ll encounter increasingly newer communities the further you head northwest along Highway 183. In the more industrial setting due north, you can find more affordable housing for purchase or rent.
The Domain, Austin’s newest shopping mecca, is home to Neiman Marcus and other high-end stores, but it also encompasses a broad range of popular retailers and a vibrant, yet relaxed, outdoor setting that frequently features live music. Just around the corner, the Arboretum area and Arbor Market add to the abundant restaurants and storefronts in this part of town.
Northwest Austin is one of the city’s fastest growing areas, with new home neighborhoods and retail centers anchored primarily by big box brands. If you work along the Loop 360 corridor, this part of town can offer suburban living with a reasonable commute and housing that is generally more affordable than on the west side.
Homes tend to have more square footage, larger closets, and more spacious bathrooms than are typical in the older homes in established neighborhoods closer to downtown. Oftentimes they are more affordable and you can get more bang for your real estate buck.
